When I try to make a graph from StatMate, I get a message "Cannot create graph. Graphing Requires Prism 4...".
StatMate is not able to create graphs. Instead, it sends commands and data to Prism, which makes the graph. So you must have GraphPad Prism installed (4.02 or later for Windows, 4.0b or later for Mac). If you have an earlier release of Prism 4, update free from the support page at www.graphpad.com . If you have Prism 2 or 3, you'll need to purchase an upgrade.
Serial numbers
The first time Prism runs, it asks for your serial number, which it then stores. This doesn't always work properly if the first time you run Prism is by making a graph from StatMate. Instead launch Prism directly, by double-clicking on its icon, and then enter its serial number when prompted. Now you can make graphs from StatMate.
Registry (Windows only)
For StatMate to send a graph to Prism, Prism has to set up some Windows registry entries. This can only happen when Prism is run while you are logged in with admin rights. You can either restart Windows and log in as an admin, or (Vista only), right click on the Prism icon and choose 'Run as administrator' (and then enter the Windows password). This only has to be done once, in order to set up the necessary registry entries. After that, StatMate will be able to make graphs even if you are not logged in as an admin.
Temporary files
StatMate "talks" to Prism by creating some temporary files. Therefore the location where StatMate will save the temporary files must have permissions set to allow file creating and writing. This location depends on which version of Windows or the Mac OS you are running:
Mac OS 9:
[system disk]:Temporary Items (hidden folder)
Mac OS X:
[system disk]:tmp:[user id]:TemporaryItems
Windows 2000 or XP:
[system disk]:\Documents and Settings\[local user]\Local Settings\Temp
Windows 98:
[system disk]\Windows\temp
