Troubleshooting sending a graph or layout from Prism to Microsoft Powerpoint

Prism Windows and Mac has a button to send a graph or layout to Powerpoint. This faq explains how to troubleshoot when this command doesn't work.

Prism Mac and MS Office 2015

With the new release of PowerPoint Mac 2015, sending to PowerPoint from Prism 6 is harder, as PowerPoint introduces a new step. After you click Send in Prism, nothing seems to happen. Switch to PowerPoint, and you'll see a dialog box something like this one:

This appears because PowerPoint is "sand boxed" so needs you to give it permission to access the temporary file that Prism created. Select the listed file, and then click "Select.." at the bottom of that dialog, and the graph will appear as it should.

We've changed Prism 7 so this alert won't occur. It is only with Prism 6 and the latest Office (which didn't exist when Prism 6 came out).

Given this extra step, you'll probably find it easier to copy/paste, rather than send, Prism 6 graphs to PowerPoint. The only advantage of sending (vs. Copy/pasting) is that sending automatically sets the background color of the PowerPoint slide to match the background color in Prism.

Prism Mac and MS Office 2011

Prism 6.0h:  If you use OS X 10.7.5 and 10.8.5, it works fine. On newer OS X versions, you'll see the same problems as mentioned above for Office 2015.

Prism 7: If PowerPoint (or Word) are already running, the Send command works fine. If PowerPoint or Word are not already running, the Send command in Prism won't work at all.

Prism Windows

We know of a few situations where Send to PowerPoint doesn't work.

  • If Prism is running in a regular mode (non-admin), while PowerPoint is running as administrator., sending to PowerPoint won't work and you'll see a message "Cannot start PowerPoint. PowerPoint is not properly installed." . However, copy-paste will work. It will also work fine if PowerPoint (or Word) is not already running, but is launched by Prism's send command.
  • If Prism is running with admin privileges but Office is not, sending won't work, and you'll see a message "Cannot start PowerPoint. PowerPoint is not properly installed." . However, copy-paste will work. It will also work fine if PowerPoint (or Word) is not already running, but is launched by Prism's send command.
  • Prism is a 32 bit program and cannot send a graph or layout to a 64-bit version of PowerPoint. But copy/paste works fine.

For the first two points above, to run an application with admin rights (or to not run with admin rights)  Fnding the appropriate Prism or Word or PowerPoint .exe file, or its icon in the start screen, right click, and find "Run as administrator). With Windows 10, you'll find More.. in the right-click menu, and Run as Administrator in a secondary menu when you click More.
