I've pasted Prism graphs into a Word (or PowerPoint) document but they don't show up on my computer screen. All I see is a box with a red X, or text that says {EMBED Prism 5.document}. How can I fix this?

This happens because of an unhelpful options setting in Word.

Word 2000, 2002, 2003

  1. Drop the Tools menu, choose Options
  2. On the Options dialog, go to the View tab.
  3. Uncheck the options for  "Picture Placeholders". If it is checked, you see a red X rather than your graph.
  4. Uncheck "Field codes."  When Field codes is checked, Word shows words about prism object, rather than your graph.

Word 2007

  1. Click the Office Button (circle in the upper left of your Word Window).
  2. Click Word Options.
  3. On the Options dialog, click Advanced, and scroll down to the section labeled 'Show document content'.
  4. Uncheck 'Show picture placeholders' .
  5. Uncheck 'Show filed codes instead of their values'.
