If I purchase an upgrade of a GraphPad program, does the installer require the presence of the older version?

When you purchase an upgrade, you will get the same CD (or downloaded installer) as a new customer. You can install the new version on a new computer, even if it doesn't have the prior version installed.

In constrast, the free updaters we post on the web site for minor updates do require that the prior version already be installed.
