How to create a screen shot or video capture.

In some cases, the best way to ask for technical support is to send screen shots that show what went wrong or what is confusing. Or perhaps a video showing a series of steps. That can also be helpful when showing colleagues or family how to accomplish something on a computer, or to share part of a page.

Tools built into Windows

  • The Snipping tool captures screenshots and allows recording a video (introduced in Windows 11). To record a video on Windows 11 - run the Snipping tool (find it in the search bar by typing “Snipping”), select “record” from the main toolbar in the Snipping tool, and click New. Then select an area of the screen to be recorded.

  • The Xbox Game Bar allows recording a video on Windows. It is a built-in application.

  • The Steps Recorder records the exact steps you take while reproducing a problem.  It can give us the information we need to reproduce a problem.

Tool built into MacOS

The screenshot toolbar on your Mac allows taking screenshots or recording a video of the entire screen or a portion of it so we can use them to reproduce the issues.
