Graph tip - Why is there extra space between bars on a grouped graph? Why are the bars so thin?

Read on if Prism is adding extra space, and you can't figure out why. This problem can come up in two ways. If you want to learn how to change the size of gaps, click here

You left blank rows in the table

If you leave empty rows in the data table, Prism (by default) will create zero-height bars.

If you don't want the blank rows, or blank cells, to be shown as zero height bars, double-click on any bar on the graph to open the Format Graph dialog and go to the Graph Settings tab. Then choose to not leave a gap.

Prism is confused about where the table ends

Your table can look fine with no blank cells and no blank rows between rows with data. But Prism can get confused and leave space for empty rows below the last row with values.

When this happens, there are two alternative ways to fix the problem:

  • Change the setting on the third tab of Format Graph, as shown above.
  • Select the row below the last row with numbers, right click, and Delete. This will force Prism to rethink which is the last row, and the graph will now look fine, even if you don't change the setting in Format Graph.
