After I copy a Prism graph or layout, nothing will paste. Using the Send-to-Word or Send-to-Powerpoint buttons don't work.
The information below refers to obsolete versions of Prism. Update your Prism version here.
Prism 5.00 Windows and Vista -- UAC must be turned on
User Access Control (UAC) should be turned on to use Prism 5.00. To check this, go to the Control Panel, and then to User Accounts and Family Safety, and then turn on UAC in the User accounts section.
If UAC is turned off, Prism will run fine, with one exception. It will not be possible to copy Prism graphs or layouts to the clipboard or to use the Send-to-Word or Send-to-PowerPoint buttons. This problem is fixed in 5.01, so copying will work even if you have turned UAC off.
Prism 5.01 Windows. Need to run as admin once.
You can encounter this problem with a network install of Prism 5.01. Prism can't properly copy graphs to the clipboard until after it has set up some registry entries, and this can only happen when you are logged onto Windows with admin rights. So log off Windows, log back on as an admin, and launch Prism. After doing this once, you'll be able to copy and paste (or send to Word or Powerpoint) just fine even when logged in without admin rights. Prism 5.02 is smarter, and can copy and paste fine even if you never logged is an an admin. If you cannot update to 5.02, this file contains the necessary registry changes to enable copy and paste. The string [Prism5.exe PATH] should be replaced with path to Prism executable, e.g. C:\\Program Files\\GraphPad\\Prism 5\\prism.exe.
Prism 4 Windows
First make sure you have updated your Windows. If the problem persists, the application linked below will diagnose Windows/Vista clipboard issues. It was written for Windows XP but it seems to work with Vista as well (and presumably Windows 7). We have heard that this program can provide useful information that can help resolve the problem. We did not create this program, and have not tested it. It helps diagnose problems within Windows (that have nothing to do with Prism). Download GetOpenClipboardWindow.zip from here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/temp/GetOpenClipboardWindow.zip
Unzip and run the tool. it will report if any other program is causing problems with the Windows clipboard.
One user has reported that launching Prism 4 as administrator also fixes this. Instead of launching Prism by simply clicking on the program icon, right-click the icon and choose Run as Administrator.
If you cannot fix this problem, the workaround is to export your graphs and then import them into PowerPoint, Word, or another application.
Prism 1-5 Windows -- Problems with .CLP files
When copying a graph or objects to the clipboard, Prism (Windows version) also creates the file Prism.clp. If Prism version 1-3 is unable to create the Prism.clp file (because it doesn't have permission to write into the folder it wants to use), then nothing is copied to the clipboard. If Prism version 4-5 is unable to create Prism.clp, you won't be able to paste within Prism, but will be able to paste to other programs.
Change the permission of that folder to full control, and you'll be able to copy again.
Here are the locations Prism uses, depending on which version of Windows you use:
Windows 95, 98, or ME: \Windows
Windows NT: \Winnt
Windows XP and 2000:
Prism 3: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Prism\
Prism 4: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\GraphPad Software\Prism\4.0
Windows Vista and WIndows 7:
[system disk]:\Users\[local user]\AppData\Roaming\GraphPad Software\Prism\5.0\Prism.clp
Note that you must set read&write permissions in both the "General" tab and the "Security" tab (NTFS permissions) of the Properties dialog.
Also try simply deleting all copies of Prism.clp that you can find. Prism will create them again.
If setting those permissions didn't solve the problem and you are running a network license of Prism and are not logged on as an admin, try this: Logon once as an administrator and run Prism (from your workstation). This lets Prism create some registry entries, which requires admin rights. Without these registry entries, you may not be able to copy and paste graphs or layouts from Prism into other programs, and you won't be able to launch Prism using VBA commands (rarely used; see the last chapter of the Prism User's Guide). After that, copy and paste should work even when you are not logged in as an administrator.
Prism 4 Mac
If you go to a graph, use the "Select all" command, and then try to paste in another program, you may find that nothing is pasted (depends on the program, and which version of OSX you use). This is easy to work around. Simply skip the step where you select all. If you go to a graph, and use the Copy command (or button, or keyboard shortcut), everything will be copied. There is no need to first use the Select All command, and in some cases using that command will prevent anything from being copied. (We'll fix in 4.0c.)
One person couldn't paste Prism graphs into Excel 11.1. Updating from OSX 10.2.8 to OSX 10.3 solved the problem. We don't understand this entirely, but there appears to be a bug in OSX 10.2 that Apple has fixed.
