A Prism graph object in a Prism layout or pasted into another program is way bigger than the Prism graph.
When you place a Prism graph onto a layout, it becomes a graph object. Prism includes a margin, but tries to include just the graph and any text or drawings on the graph, and no extra space. Similarly, when you copy or export a graph, Prism tries to just copy the graph and drawings and text (and embedded tables...) but little extra space.
In some cases, there is lots of extra white space, making it impossible to position the graph as you want. The margin around the graph is too large, so you can't enlarge the object enough to fill the page. In other words, the actual graph fills only a small part of the placeholder.
We know of three situations where this can happen.
- An invisible object on the page requires Prism to make the placeholder that large. Prism makes the placeholder large enough to contain all the objects (drawings, text, images) on the graph. It will leave space even for invisible objects. A text object is invisible when it contains only spaces. Any object is invisle when its only color matches the background color. To find invisible objects, drop the Edit menu and choose Select All. All objects now will have knobs, even invisible objects. Once you see where the invisible object is, you'll be able to select and delete it. Once you've done that, the extra margin in the graph object will go away.
- Some points are off scale, but you requested that row titles be placed next to the points. For example, the X value could be larger than the maximum X value of the X-axis. This only causes a problem when you have checked the option to label each point with its row title. Prism is smart enough not to plot the data points, but it tries to plot the row labels anyway, and thus leaves space for them. To work around this problem, either delete or exclude the points that have X or Y values such that they are off scale, or uncheck the option on Format Graph to label each point with its row label. We have fixed this in 5.03 and 5.0c.
- Some data points have coordinates that place them right in the gap between axis segments. Prism now simply ignore these points. But earlier versions of Prism got confused and ended up making the graph placeholder too large This problem was fixed in Prism 4.03 and 4.0c.

A bug in Prism 7 Windows (up to 7.02) makes the placeholder too big when the graph uses lots of memory (either by having lots of data or having a large image embedded) and the video DPI settings in Windows is greater than 100%. Note that this is a problem only in Prism. When you export, copy, send, or print the layout, it looks fine in a target app or printer. Workarounds: reduce DPI in Windows control panel back to 100%, or/and reduce number of data points or line segments, if possible. Or just send a layout to PowerPoint to arrange graphs more easily.
