I began my career doing research in the regulation of alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors in human blood cells. I wrote some programs to analyze my own data, and found this more fun than doing experiments. Others used the program, and in 1984 I published "Graph-PAD" with Academic Press. This stood for Graph Plotter And Digitizer. The program could draw simple graphs on a plotter, or you could put a graph into the plotter, move the pen manually, and digitize the results. After a year, Academic Press decided to stop selling software, and I published version 2 (which included nonlinear regression) with the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). When they decided to stop selling software a year later, I decided to form my own company, GraphPad Software. This began as a very part time endeavor, but now is a very full time job for me.
